How do I cancel a credit card if I have already destroyed the card?

I recently ordered my credit report and noticed that I still have an open credit card account with a department store. I thought I cancelled this card a few years ago. I no longer have the account number. How do I close this account without the account number and have it removed from my credit card as an "open" account?|||Contact customer service at the department store. They should be able to either direct you to the correct department or cancel it themselves. Have all of your other information ready, such as previous addresses and social security number so they can verify identity.|||Call the credit card company. They may not like to, but they should be able to look up your account number, if you give them your Social Security Number. I had to do this last year when applying for a Line of credit.|||If you know the card company that issued the card. Find the 800# in the internet or wait for your next bill to come, all info are there.|||Get a copy of your credit report. It will have the last 4 digits of the account number and the address of the c.c. company. Write to them and close it. They can do it with the last 4 digits.

Also check to be sure nothing else is wrong on your report.

You're entitled to a free copy of your credit report annually from the 3 agencies. Use this site. It's the one that is really free. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/i鈥?/a>

It is best to stagger getting the reports, so you can check to make certain the corrections appear. Get one. Write in and fix the problems. Wait 3-4 months, then get one from another company so you can see if the changes were picked up.|||agh stop!!!

don't cancel it!! this will hurt your credit score. you WANT open accounts; especially open accounts with ZERO balances.

that tells the credit bureau that you're SOO responsible with your credit that you let it just sit there without tempting you.

if you're attempting to hurt your credit, then simply track down the phone number and give them a call.

if you keep it open (as i recommend) a few years down the road the dept. store may contact YOU, saying they're going to close your account unless you spend some money. at THIS point, let them close the account. the bureau is VERY impressed when you out-patience a department store. :)
